[SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] LastMix - Another mixer to feed Don't Stop The Music

Here's yet another mixer to be used with 7.9's Don't Stop The Music
(DSM) feature: LastMix. This plugin provides mixes based on Last.fm's
services. It supports local music as well as mixing from music services
(Spotify, Deezer, Napster, Qobuz, Tidal at this time).

Unfortunately it's not as smart as SmartMix was by far. It's using a
mixture of Similar Tracks, Similar Artists and Last.fm's tags to come up
with its result. Please give it a try and report your experience. It
might need some tweaking in the mixing department.

There are no options. Just select it from the DSTM menu and let it
surprise you. Have fun!

Nice replacement..... Seems to work fine. Even with Danish artists....
Thank you Michael

Yes, it's 7.9 only, as it relies on 7.9's DSTM plugin.

DSTM isnt available in 7.8 so I expect Michael's answer is No.

Looks different to "Spotification" in that it seems to add 5 tracks at a
time rather than 20 - is that right Michael?

> Looks different to "Spotification" in that it seems to add 5 tracks at a

That's correct. All those mixers and handlers for DSTM are responsible
for how and what they add. Spotify would deliver the full list in one
single query. For LastMix I often have to run multiple queries (to
last.fm, mysb.com and/or the music service) for a single track. I saw
mixes where it took 30s and dozens of requests to come up with those
five tracks...

The problem is that Last.fm does not return track IDs or the like.
Therefore the plugin has to run searches based on artist and track name
on those music services. And again only Spotify would allow me to use
both items for the search. In all other cases I would get a list of
title matches, from which I have to figure out which was by the desired
artist.

It's a bit messy. But I've learned a few lessons with SmartMix already :-).

AFAIK its a addon for the DSTM Plugin (which isnt available as seperate
download but is contained in 7.9)
The install xml for lastmix says: <minVersion>7.9</minVersion> - so
its better to update your lms to 7.9.
7.9 is stable enough.

thanks to all for the answer, there was (and probably is) an unsolved
"crossfade problem with online sources" with 7.9 for a long time, that's
why I'm insisting on 7.8 nightlies. I will give a try to 7.9 again,
hopefully it's fixed. At the end I'm curious for the new Lastmix
plugin.
Thanks Michael for trying new alternatives.

Slighty OT but I'd just like to point out a very slight issue with DSTM
which isn't obvious and will catch out some people.
Synchronised players - each player in the sync group must have the same
DSTM settings. It is easy to overlook this as matters stand but if you
know, you know. A simple reminder in the Web GUI would probably be a
good idea. Just an idea.

Oh, this might actually be a bug in the DSTM plugin (and LastMix, too).
I'll look into this. Thanks for the heads up!

First real opinion. It's generally OK but has produced some odd results

I think I'll have to add some logging to learn what mix method (similar
tracks or artists, or tags) was being used. I'm pretty sure this is
caused by some tag. I've had the plugin mix starting from a Youssou
N'Dour album. One of the first tracks added was a David Guetta tune.
Sometimes there are popular tags like 'seen live' which could trigger
such odd mixes.

Does LastMix grab tracks from the users "loved" tracks if you have a
LastFM account?

No, not yet. I wanted to get something out to get the discussion going.
But as I'm not really happy yet with the results, I'm always looking for
options.

One problem I have with Last.fm's results is that they are pretty
static. Tags would mostly be the same for a selection of tracks, and
getting the top tracks for a tag thus would often result in very similar
playlists. The same goes for an artist's top tracks etc. And I fear a
mix based on "loved" tracks would result in more of the same...

I've also tried the LastMix plugin and it is cool to have this new
possebility to discover new music! thanks Michael for all your great
work!

But for what reason ever I only get a playlist with 25 songs and then
music stops.

I am using logitechmediaserver 7.9.0~1469605610 and I am subscribed to
Spotify and Deezer.

Has anyone an idea what causes this behaviour? What info do you need to
debug this issue?

Cheers,

Did you check the server.log file? Would it always stop after 25 tracks,
or is this number rather random?

I remember having had similar reports with SmartMix when using
Spotify... but then I hoped we were over it. And the reason I thought
there was at the time wouldn't apply to LastMix. If you can live without
Spotify for a while, could you please try without it?

I bet that was the "singer-songwriter" tag... Hmm... Tags just don't

/usr/share/perl5/Slim/Plugin/DontStopTheMusic/Plugin.pm line 100.

Also I've found entries like this:

[16-07-29 12:19:23.8867] Slim::Utils::Misc::msg (1244) Warning:

The first error occured after updating to
logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1469802843_amd64.deb this evening, the second
error was with logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1469605610_all.deb (yes, I am
using the full 64 bit version now). With the older LMS version the
settings menu for DSTM was displayed.

My system is Debian Wheezy 64 bit with the latest patches, perl version
is 5.14. I can provide more infos if needed, just let me know. Also I
can update to a newer Debian or perl version if this will help.

Ciao & thx,

Schoepp

That would happen when accessing the settings menu on the player, but
not in the web UI? I just committed a fix for this. Builds should be
available shortly. Thanks for the report!

Please update to 1.1.0. It should be available now.

This seems great. Will Google Music be implemented?

You'd have to ask that plugin's author. I'll be happy to help wherever I
can.

LastMix was automatically upgraded to 1.1.0 on my LMS, but now I get
errors:

[16-07-30 22:25:49.3707] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (131)
Error: Select task failed calling

I have LMS 7.9.0-161.1091 on Synology and cannot upgrade this until
pinkdot releases a new build for Synology. Is that the latest version of
LMS? Where can I check this (is there a page/forum thread that shows
release info for LMS)?

Can I go back to LastMix 0.1?

As you'll have to do some manual work on the DS anyway, there are two
options:

a.) replace the updated Don't Stop The Music code. You'd have to find
the Slim/Plugin/DontStopTheMusic folder and put this file there:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Logitech/slimserver/public/7.9/Slim/Plugin/DontStopTheMusic/Plugin.pm

b.) you manually install an old LastMix version. You'd have to grab
http://www.herger.net/_data/LastMix-1.0.0.zip, unpack it and put its
content in the Plugins folder.

Please note that I'm not familiar with the Diskstation. In both cases
you'd have to figure out where the right place was for those files. You
can find the folder information in the web UI Settings/Information.

Good luck!

CORRECTION:
Now the plugin does not work at all. Putting settings back to "lastmix"

Have installed a newer version of 7.9 . Now both LASTMIX and LASTMIX
FAVORIT ARTISTS works fine.
:)

Playlistgenerator still doesn't work. But With Dynamic Playlists I can
get arround. I prefer to have the mix functions available :)

Hi Michael

Great work as always :-)

I've installed LastMix (v1.1.0) and am running the current LMS Build
(Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.0 - 1469716263)

When I enable LastMix in DTSM i get the following error:

-Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (131) Error: Select task failed
calling Slim::Networking::Async::HTTP::_http_read_body: Can't locate
object method "deDupe" via package
"Slim::Plugin::DontStopTheMusic::Plugin" at
C:\ProgramData\Squeezebox\Cache\InstalledPlugins/Plugins/LastMix/DontStopTheMusic.pm
line 393.
; fh=Slim::Networking::Async::Socket::HTTP=GLOB(0xce904c4)-

If i set DSTM to MusicIP it works fine though

I've tried downgrading DSTM to v0.1 with the same result as you
suggested in an earlier post.

I'm beginning to suspect you of foul play Michael :) First it was Chris
Deburgh that kept on popping up, now it's Beyoncé and Rihanna. I've got
about 1 album's worth of each, added to the library for my daughters,
but they both keep popping up when using LastMix, even though they're
not in my LastFM statistics :D

To use LastMix, do I need to have LastFM Scrooble enabled? (I've always
had this deselected).
Also, wasn't there a LastFM Squeezebox App? I don't see it in

Hi there!
I got the same problem as mentioned in #74.
I've installed the latest 7.9 package for Synology and have LastMix 1.1

DSTM with other options actually works fine. Scrobbling to Last.FM also
works fine on its own. Any ideas? Thanks alot!

Then there's no other cure than for that case: update your LMS.

v1.1.1 is on its way. It should try harder to get some playable mix, in
particular when using local files only.

I did add some logging to better understand what's going on when things
fail anyway. When you report odd results, then please include the
server.log file. Thanks!

Hi Michael,

i just found some strange line in my server.log (set lastmix to info -
like you mentioned in the other Thread)
> [16-08-04 18:59:17.4386] Plugins::LastMix::DontStopTheMusic::_checkTrack

I do have 79 Tracks from The Jackson 5, tagged as TPE1 and or TPE2. All
are spelled exactly "The Jackson 5"

Hi again,

now i am running the latest version. Starting with the exact same song -
but it seems lastmix goes into a fallback?

That's odd indeed. The API call for search would indeed find it, but not
the track itself. If I get rid of the " (Man without country remix)"
appendix, then it would be found, too. Unfortunately that's a question I
can't answer. it's something in the API handler.

Hallo Michael!
I have the problem that the music stops after the last song and Lastmix
is not working anymore. All other variaties of DSTM except Lastmix are
working. I am on LSM 7.9.0 - 161.1091 and Lastmix 1.1.1.
Thanks, Klaus!

That means Pinkdot's LMS Version 7.9.0.161.1091 is not up to date?

If you get that error, then yes, it's not up to date. I think he updated
a day or two before I added that call.

But FWIW: I've modified LastMix to come with a replacement which should
work with older builds, too. It will print a warning in the log saying
that LMS was outdated. But you can ignore this for now. If you still get
it after the next LMS update, then something's wrong.

Make sure you got LastMix 1.1.3 or more recent.

@mherger,
I've activated DSTM and set it to use Spotify Recommendations, and does
play forever, but the mix is random as far as I can tell. It roams from
Elton John to Metallica and back to Frank Sinatra and then to Abba and
so on. There doesn't seem to be any logic in that. So I was pleased when
I read about Lastmix, but I can't find it anywhere in the DSTM option
list. Do I have to do something to get it updated?

LastMix is a plugin you'll need to install it over your settings/plugins

After some investigation (including a dummy player and a skip to next
track script after 5 secs.) i would say - it only fetches these files
from "Albums" or Samplers it doesnt add tracks from my 12" 45 Maxi/Ep
when they have (additional Information) in the Title.
Anyways its good enough.

Thanx:cool:

Michael,

I'm really, really liking Lastmix. it's integrating well with my large
library, and also pulling in a good sampling of Deezer tracks. What
specifically impresses me is the appropriateness of many of its choices.
For instance:

With the Echonest Smartmix, if I played Talk Talk's -Laughing Stock- as
a seed, it'd respond by mixing up a bunch of random 80s pop, which was
extremely jarring after listening to the sparse, ethereal album.

Lastmix, on the other hand, mixes in a bunch of strange, sparse music
that's WAY more appropriate to the seed.

Let's hope this good stuff continues.

LastMix is generally giving me very good results now. Just one question
Michael. How far back in the playlist does last mix go?

I ask because a couple of days ago I was using a particular player and
listening to some Bowie. I used the same player today but chose to
listen to some Prog Rock. I didn't clear what was left of the Bowie
playlist I just hit Play on my chosen album. Being Prog Rock it only had
a few tracks. LastMix gave me some more Prog Rock but also another Bowie
track. Should I have cleared the Bowie playlist?

All the way. It (actually: the DSTM plugin) picks five random tracks
from your playlist.

If you really don't want them to be included, then yes. You could
actually risk to get a Bowie only mix, if the randomness was picking all
seeds from that part of the list.

Ok, that's a bug. I did remove the article from the artist name in the

No. But if you want to use the "my fav artists" or similar option, then
LastMix would use the AudioScrobbler's prefs to get your user name. If
it can't find that value, that option would not be provided, but only
the other two LastMix selections.

There was. But Last.fm stopped the streaming service years ago.

Are you running the latest and greatest LastMix version? I disabled the
tag based mixing, which often lead to this kind of unexpected behaviour.
And are you using the "local music only" variety or online services, too?

That's obviously not recent enough. You need a more recent build.

Forget this question. I can see that the plugin has bin checked again
after the last upgrade of 7.9 . I had it unchecked before the upgrade ?
I will uncheck again and see what happens.

It quite obviously is still there. And I wouldn't be surprised if DSTM
and SmartMix didn't go together very well...

I'll probably release another SmartMix build which would uninstall
itself for good. I'm not 100% whether you can even easily uninstall a
plugin which is no longer available.

It is gone now in the menu and settings by unchecking it. But DSTM does
not work at all any more. I have issues with Erlands plugins too.
Playlist manager does not work, and there is issues with
dynamic playlists and sql playlists too. So I think this version of 7.9
is quite buggy.

After having Morcheeba, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rammstein in a row at
the end of the very calm Sountrack album of "Theeb" I have immediately
decided to upgrade my plugin to v1.1 with latest 7,9 nightly:(

I hope better results in every upgrade and continue to test.
Can someone tell me where is this new "favorite artists mix" option and
how to use it. I have the last fm scrobler plugin installed and active
but don't see anything on Player DSTM tab, on main menu or on context
menus.

Hmm... that option indeed requires the scrobbler plugin's configuration
to be available, as it's using your username to get your
recommendations. Does scrobbling work?

Replacing Don't Stop The Music code results in new errors:

[16-07-31 14:26:17.7908] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (131)
Error: Select task failed calling Slim::Web::HTTP::processHTTP: Can't

line 42.
; fh=Slim::Web::HTTP::ClientConn=GLOB(0xd616fb8)

I reverted that and am now using LastMix 1.0.0
This works.

Still one unanswered question: I have Logitech Media Server Version:
7.9.0 - 161.1091. Is this the latest version? If not: is there an easy
way to find out what the latest version is? Is there a (sticky) forum
post that clearly lists that latest LMS version? Or a wiki page?

There's Pinkdot's LMS Repack or similar available which provides updated
LMS builds for Synology:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103636

But I'm not sure how recent his latest builds are. Check that thread for
details.

Thanks - just installed it and it looks nice.

When clicking on "Settings" under Plugins - LastMix it shows the
settings for MusicArtistInfo plugin
(http://LMS:9000/plugins/Extensions/settings/plugins/MusicArtistInfo/settings.html)
and I don't see any settings. Is this correct?

Can I specify which online sources should be used?

OK.

So it uses always all available cloud streaming services?

No. Only one of them, picking the first available in this order:

Tidal
Spotify
Deezer
Napster

Should the user happen to have Qobuz installed, then this would be top
of the list.

Hi Michael,
I have upgraded to 7.9 to test Lastmix and it's great to have some mixes
again. Although it's not as smart as Smartmix, it's trying :)

So since we don't have a tool like Blender or saved recipes anymore, can
I suggest something: Can Lastmix use last 5 tracks to create it's mixes,
not only the last track. This can be a workaround and maybe a simpler
way to tweak playlists. We can clear a playlist and add 3-5 sample
tracks like a recipe. (or is this already working like that?)

Yes, it already takes up to five random tracks from the current queue as
the seed for the mix. If you add up to five tracks only, you should get
close to what you want.

Michael, I have a suggestion.
Now we have a working mixer again (I know it may take some tweaking to
get perfect like Smart Mix was) can I suggest an addition to the Random
series - Random Mix Seed - which would add 5 tracks to your playlist
randomly either from an artist, an album or a genre which would then be
used as your seed tracks for DSTM / LastMix.

Does that mean that the Synology LMS is not up to date?

Yes, it dates back from January. You should get the "7.9 repack"
discussed in the 3rd party hardware group.

Ok, I was able to update LMS with the 7.9 repack for Synology.
I am now testing LastFM mix.
I have a feature request: I also use Spicefly SugarCube. This has
options like 'Block Artist Repeating for x Tracks' and 'Block Album
Repeating for x Tracks'. Can you add similar features to LastFM Mix? The
first test mix that LastFM mix created had two Nirvana tracks that
played just after each other. And it picked these two Nirvana tracks
from the same live album (I also have the same tracks on the studio
albums).

And a question: when does it add tracks? Does it only add track when my
playlist is almost finished?

Yeah, this is something which has been bothering me, too. Not sure yet
when and how I'll fix this. But it's definitely something I've thought
about improving.

> And a question: when does it add tracks? Does it only add track when my

When the second to last track is being played. Or, if there's only one
track, when that one (and last) track has been played half way through.
Subject to change, as sometimes lookups take so much time I fear we
might miss th end of the playback before we got any results back...

Yup - that happens to me all the time. I am running LMS on a Pogoplug
E02 which works, but seems to be to slow to populate the playlist before
the last song is finished. The playback finishes and when I look in the
playlist some time later, there are new songs there.

Cheers

What is the basis of the LastMix results when playing a compilation
album? Is it based on all artists/tracks or only the last on the album?

It's picking five random tracks from the current playlist. The mix
currently only deals with artists and tracks, albums aren't part of it
at all. Neither in the selection of the seed nor the creation of the
track list to be played.

Hmm... I wonder whether it's related to using Qobuz. I saw the delays
with Qobuz, too. If you were using the "local music only" choice, would
that speed things up?

BTW: the two of us are in a very exclusive circle of mailing list users
(rather than the web based forum). Could you please configure your email
program to not add the "reply-to" header for these lists? I always have
to start over once I see I've forgotten to "reply to all"...

OK - will try over lunch and let you know.

Is this better? I only reply to the list now. Previously, I replied to
you and CCd the list.

Good

I Tried over lunch LastMix (local) and it worked perfectly. I am now
trying the LastMix with Qobuz, and playback of local tracks in the
original playlist even stops when processing (I assume) quobuz searches.

It might also be memory - I realized that the poor pogoplug (256MB) was
running LMS with maximum performance...

Changed it and am restarting LMS.

New test...

While testing, I don't see the options for Don'tStopTheMusic anymore
when using iPeng - before one of the last updates, I think it was there?

Also: I have a large number of Favorites, and all appear in the DSTM
options. Would it be possible to group the Favourites into a submenu or
indent them a bit more so that they are visually separate from the mix
options?

Back to the test...

OK - not working. It is stopping to play at the end, becomes
unresponsive, I have to restart it (if I don't want to wait really
long). I am now using local only again.

Unfortunately I have no other streaming service I could try it with as I
have only a qobuz subscription - so I don't know if it is generally the
powerless computer or qobuz in particular.

But local only is a very nice option!

Cheers,

Rainer

That's a question for the DSTM thread. But anyway: I've made use of
Favorites in DSTM optional. You can disable it in the Favorites plugin
settings.

I'll look into how to better present long lists. It's on my bucket list.

LastMix 1.1.0 is on its way to you! This update features a new "Your
Favorite Artists" mix option.

Additional changes:

- disabled tag based mixes - they lead to too many irritating results
- improved de-duplication of tracks
- bug fixes

*Please note*: you'll need to run the very latest LMS 7.9 build or this
update will fail to load!

Just looked at this a bit closer: API calls to search for tracks would
take an average 5 seconds to return from Qobuz. Now that's super slow.
And then there's quite some processing, which would hurt your low-power
device much more than my mac. Eg. I'm pre-caching track information in
the disk cache. This took about 600ms on my SSD based MacBook Pro for
nine searches. I'd imagine this could take a while on your little box.

I'll look into optimizing this pre-caching, as we usually wouldn't need
the track info for all search results, but only the ones we're actually
using (which might be about 1% of those found in this case...).

Hello Michael,

I see a 'settings' option on the plugin page for Last Mix, but when i
select, it leads me to the settings for 'Music and Artist Information'

yapp its hardcoded in the install.xml. Maybe a c&p bug.

1.1.0 will remove that link.

Please help me understand what you're trying to achieve here. Why
wouldn't you use a pure RandomMix in this case anyway? You don't want to
have any control over the mix anyway.

Can we meet on a public playground? I'm not going to bars that much any
more :-).

I don't know... it's hard to tell without logging set to info or debug
:-(. I've often suspected tags to be the culprit, but in this case even
those don't make sense.

Did you only have the Little Fluffy Clouds in the queue?
