[SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] Spotty 2.5.x - Spotify Connect for your Squeezebox

Here's a small update. Not really new features, but mostly reliability
improvements (hopefully :-)), and a lot of work in the background. In
particular in environments where local discovery does not work, the
daemon should now behave more reliably. I've seen situations where the
daemon would continue to work but no longer be seen by Spotify. This
situation should be handled better in this release. Please let me know
about your experience.

Enjoy the music!

Slartibartfast......have you done the following?

Add http://www.herger.net/slim-plugins/test.xml to the plugins

Spotty playback on my SB3 keeps going silent for a few seconds, then
resuming for a few minutes, then another moment of silence. There's no
Rebuffering message or anything. Is there a good way to troubleshoot?

Playing Spotify on my laptop on the same network is flawless, and so is
playing MP3s over the SB3.

(This isn't a brand new problem with 2.5.0, just to be clear: it's been
going on for a while.)

Give a little more information about your setup: server hardware, OS,
CPU. Then check the server.log file for any hint (or better: upload to

Thanks. It's a Synology DS216+II, which has a Celeron N3060 and a
Linux-based OS. It's pretty capable.

I turned on debug logging, and watching the log, I see that every time
there's a silence, it gives a cache purge message:

Code:
--------------------
Plugins::Spotty::Plugin::purgeAudioCacheAfterXTracks (442) Played 4 song(s) since last audio cache purge.
--------------------

There's no silence when it actually does the cache cleanup, only when it
does that check in the middle of a song.

Just sent the log.

Should definitely be good enough. How much memory? Are you running lots
of other services on it?

That's odd, as this usually should be a quick check with nothing to do.
In particular as long as that number is lower than 5...

Would you know how to ssh in to your box? If so, could you please "ls
-al" the content of the spotty subfolder inside LMS' cache folder (see
Settings/Information)?

Thanks for the new version!
I can now use it for my three synced players, but I still have a few
dropouts when I use Spotify Connect with synced players. You have more
logs in your dropbox.
This is what happened this morning:

8:20 music stops, two processes -n & -c, progress bar running in
Spotify, stops at end of song.
progress bar stopped in LMS web gui
press >|, music back
8:36 unchecked "nicht im lokalen Netzwerk bekannt geben": can't play
music
other box (Überwache die Verbindung) vanished
music has dropouts
checked nicht bekannt geben und Überwache Verbindung
8:40 no player to connect to, spotty-hf -n gone
8:43 players there again, connected
8:57 music stops -c & -n still there, spotify still connected and
progressing, LMS progress stopped
8:59 end of song, spotify stopped, pressed >|, music plays again
9:06 music stops, -c & -n still there, spotify still connected and
progressing, LMS progress stopped,
pressed >|, music plays again
9:08 music stops, -n has a new PID, same as above, pressed >|, music
plays
9:10 -n has new PID

Thanks again for all the good work!

Hmm... I don't see anything about a playback stop, nor restart playback.
Did you press play in Spotify or LMS?

Well... the message clearly says don't touch these options unless you
know what you're doing - or are told to touch them. As explained earlier
local discovery doesn't work for your because there are conflicting
services running. That box is checked for a reason.

> music has dropouts
> checked nicht bekannt geben und Überwache Verbindung

This option is only available if local discovery is disabled, because in
that case you depend on a reliable connection. Otherwise you don't.

> 8:40 no player to connect to, spotty-hf -n gone

Please note that -n is part of every call. You'd have to check the full
command line to be sure what you're looking at. "--single-track" would
indicate a helper streaming data. "--lms" would be the controlling
daemon. That's the two most important cases.

> 8:59 end of song, spotify stopped, pressed >|, music plays again

Again no sign of a reported failure :-(. I'm a bit at a loss here.
Something about your system must be non average... maybe server load?
You mentioned a lot of services running. How is memory usage and CPU
load? Is this plain Raspbian, or max2play or something?

I monitor CPU and memory every minute. Loads are under 0.5 and available
memory around 680MB.
Plain Raspbian Stretch Lite.

I consider moving LMS, spotty and maybe smb/HDD to a separate RPi.
What is an advisable (minimum) configuration? I have a RPi 1 and a Zero
floating around I could put to use.
Or I get a 3+ right away to spare myself the hassle.

Pi 1 or Zero won't do it. A Pi2 is the minimum imho. And piCorePlayer.

why picoreplayer? I wouldn't use the box to play music, just serve it.
i have pCP on a zeroW for my kitchen player and am quite happy with it.
but no LMS on that box.

pCP is the simplest and quickest way to get not only a player up and
running, but a server, too. I do this myself at the office, where pCP is
a pure server installation, serving a Transporter.

I know, the name is misleading. I already had suggested to do a
piCoreServer version, too :-)...

Hi eater,

the log you uploaded shows that you still got the old
SpotifyProtocolHandler plugin installed. Please get rid of all Spotify
related plugins other than Spotty.

I don't see anything in your cache folder which should cause a hiccup.

didn't appear until I input the repository and, once done, the update

Unfortunately yes. If local announcements don't work, then the players
are only visible to the account with which it is logged in. That's one
of the limitations of disabled discovery mode.

I understand you're controlling Spotty playback all from LMS/SB, not
Spotify app involved?

Could you please set logging for plugin.spotty to INFO
(Settings/Advanced/Logging), play with Spotty, then provide your
server.log.zip file?

I set logging, started play with Spotty.... and it's performing
flawlessly. Practically zero gap between songs, and hasn't gotten stuck
at the end of a song once. Dogdammit... I'll send you a log once (if)
playback begins choking again. Apologies for the bother :(

The volume seems to change to 51 when I try adjusting the volume in
Orange Squeeze. Before that the volume is 100.

Actually I am not adjusting volume in Orange Squeeze I am changing it in
the Spotify app. So the volume stays at 100 until I change the volume in
the Spotify app and it then changes to 50 ish. This did not happen with
2.4.x.

I'm pretty certain that's not new in 2.5.x, as this is nothing I touched
in that update. IMHO it's just Spotify's behaviour to always default
volume back to 50% after a de-connect. I know that this has been topic
of discussions in the librespot community (the library Spotty is using).
But I can double-check.

I have an issue using Spotty with Spotify podcasts. When I listen to
podcasts, none of the Spotty devices appear in the device list on the
Spotify application. However, my Denon receiver and my son's Chromecast
do appear in the device list, and I can transfer to those devices for
playback.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, unfortunately this is a known limitation.

Hi Michael,

Great work on Spotty ! Thank you for putting this much effort in it.
I've just installed it, and everything worked nicely during installation
: My squeezebox is properly detected everywhere, even on my laptop's
Spotify application.
However, when i try to play music, I'm only getting "clicking" sounds,
but no music. On other music sources, my SB works fine.

Would you happen to know why this is happening ? Am i maybe missing
dependencies, hardware, or anything else ?

Here is my setup :
- Squeezebox
- A raspberry pi with LMS installed
- Spotty 2.5.1 plugin (no checkbox checked, appart the one which allows
to see the SB radio on spotify connect)

Thanks !!

It's a raspbian (Wheezy)
The firmware version of the squeezebox is 7.7.3 (probably an old one)

you search in the earlier Spotty threads quite a few had the same issue.

Wheezy unfortunately isn't compatible with Spotty, as slartibartfast

There are some signs of temporary internet hiccups - not only by Spotty
related code, but LMS in general. Sometimes it seems to fail to lookup
information from mysb.com (eg. the Sounds & Effects menu data)

Hi Michael,

I enabled Spotify Connect in player settings, unticked the "Don't
announce players" box in plug-in settings, and enabled the "Optimized
Pre-buffering" feature. As a result the playback performance improved
remarkably; gaps between tracks disappeared almost completely, and
during approx. 5 hours of play a song has become 'stuck' at the end only
twice.

Oddly enough, now that I took another look at plug-in settings, I
noticed the "Don't announce players" box has its tick back, and I'm 100%
sure I didn't put it there. Huh.

That certainly doesn't make any positive difference for playback issues
when controlling though LMS anyway...

Did you read the info for this option? It will automatically be set if
the daemon crashes repeatedly.

Okay, just reporting what changes I made.

You mean the Squeezebox? It's the Receiver one, a small-ish black
plastic brick, connected to a gbit switch via ethernet.

Then I'm very much surprised the "optimize buffer" option has a positive
effect... Good to hear anyway.

Hi Michael

I'm trying to install Spotty 2.5.1 plugin in Daphile 18.07, I choose it
from the 3rd party plugins, I click Apply and it doesn't get installed.

Can you help me with this problem? It was running ok for months but I
think it got upgraded and started to fail.

Thanks in advance

Sorry Michael for the late response...

server.log shows 2 lines:

[18-11-01 21:06:34.3092] main::init (387) Starting Logitech Media Server
(v7.9.2, gitcb40858, Daphile 18.07-x86_64) perl 5.024003 -
x86_64-linux-thread-multi
[18-11-01 21:06:56.6194] Slim::Plugin::Extensions::Settings::handler
(35) attempt to set params with band random number - ignoring

I select the plugin in 3rd. party plugins, Apply, restart, then the
plugins shows in Updated plugins available, then I select it and Apply
again and it goes back to 3rd party, it's a loop...

I hope the text in the log gives you a clue. I'm running the beta
version of Daphile, so I have ssh access.

Thanks a lot!

Make sure you fully reload the settings pages before you try to install
a plugin. You seem to be doing so from a stale or outdated cached copy.

Thanks Michael

I retried from another browser with no history in Daphile Settings and
it doesn't work.

I installed the last beta version with ssh access and I cd to the
plugins cache directory and there is nothing there
(/var/daphile/mediaserver/cache/DownloadedPlugins)

The extension is there, available for downloading but I think it isn't
downloaded and installed...

The problem is that the plugin page is expecting a token when it's being
submitted. That token would change after a while. And according to the
log snippet you posted that token is expired when you tried to install
the plugin. Can you use the "Classic" skin in LMS and try again? Would
other plugins fail the same way?

I enabled plugins logging setting and see this:

(199) digest does not match
/var/daphile/mediaserver/cache/DownloadedPlugins/Spotty.zip - Spotty

Using ssh I also see Spotty.zip in the DownloadedPlugins directory and
then dissappears.

Well, hitting ctrl-c certainly will result in an invalid file. Please
try again. Also, could you please post the results of

Could you please, from the LMS machine (daphile) download the file:

curl -O http://downloads.nixda.ch/Spotty-2.5.2.zip

Then calculate it's checksum:

shasum Spotty-2.5.2.zip

What would that give you?

I sent you the shasum in another message, that gave me the clue that it
could be a network problem. I changed the location of the Daphile PC to
directly attach it to my router and the plugin was installed
correctly...

I am sorry for making you loose time, thank you for your software...

No, it hasn't.

I was wondering how you'd expect this to work: from what I can tell that
information is available for every track Spotify returns in a query. But
I cannot tell Spotify not to return them. This could lead to the
situation where I request 50 tracks, but end up with none, because all
are explicit. Eg. I would offer playlists for playback which then
wouldn't play. Is this a situation you could live with? How does
Spotify's application handle this?

In the iOS app, I believe the tracks are shown dimmed and cannot be
played back. Interestingly though, the parental control setting is
changed from within the app, so not very hard for the kids to find out
how to disable it. Probably with a proper Spotify family account there
is a better solution, I dont know?

Anyhow, it would be nice to have a similar feature in Spotty. The
parental control could preferably be enabled/disabled in the LMS web UI,
and then tracks would be listed but play back disabled (automatically
skipped). It would also be nice if cover images of albums containing a
lot of explicit content could also be replaced with a generic image. I
remember when my 5-year old son searched for something completely
innocent in the former Spotify app when suddenly the not very
child-friendly cover image of the Rammstein album Sehnsucht appears in
his face (Thank you Rammstein!). Would of course be nice if such
situations could be prevented!! ;|

LMS in my experience doesn't like tracks which eventually wouldn't play.
But I put it on my list of things to look into. I might just skip them.

> skipped). It would also be nice if cover images of albums containing a
> lot of explicit content could also be replaced with a generic image. I

Now that could become a bit more difficult. Because there's not always a
good relation between textual content and cover art, is there? Eg. Pink
Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" cover might be really disturbing to some.
And then some very explicit albums aren't any sexier than ads you'd see
on TV or hanging from walls...

In that case that filter might have worked. Alas: the explicit flag is a
track property you wouldn't get with the album list. I'd have to
download all track information in order to take the decision what
artwork to show. Which simply is not practical.

Hello.

I was a little bit stumbled today as I started to playing music at home
by mistake from work on my iphones Spotify client via 3G.
I can even switch between my players.
This i cannot do with wifes phone (android) with wifi turned off. As i
expect not to be possible.
I thought the Spotify client was using wifi/bluetooth to connect.
We have a family account and have two separate accounts registered with
spotty.

How is this possible

Spotty does connect to the Spotify servers - which would see your
players, too. But if your wife is using a different account (family
member), then she would only see "her" players outside your home, not
those connected to your account. Those are only visible in your LAN.

Ah, I feared as much. Thanks for the reply. I will try to install the
LMS on another platform then.

If you were adventurous you could try to build it yourself...
interested? It would involve installing Rust compiler on your device,
and run some commands on the NAS. And patience.

If there is an instruction for dummies on how to to it, I'd be willing
to give it a try.
I have absolutely no experience with compiling stuff, though.

Then I suggest you better spend some money for a Raspberry Pi and set
LMS up using piCorePlayer :-). As I've never compiled on a Synology NAS
myself I'm not even sure it's technically possible.

Ok, thanks. I already have a Pie, but so far this has not been my first
choice for the LMS since my local music is stored on the NAS.
I will give this a try now.

That worked like a charm.
One question remains: When are changes in the sound quality of the
spotify stream supposed to take effect? Immediately after saving or does
something (the LMS) have to be restarted for that?

Cheers!

The bitrate setting? Only on track change.

That's correct. Spotty currently would crash if avahi was running
already. Which in turn would lead to that "Don't announce..." option to
be enabled.

TBH I'm still not 100% sure how these interact. You could try to compile
spotty with the feature selected as described in above pull request
#112. Would be interesting to understand how that behaves.

Nice! I guess you got a bigger file because you didn't strip your build?
The dev build would be about 10x as large as the release build...

You can rename your build to spotty-custom and put somewhere inside your
search path. This way you won't have to replace it every time you update
Spotty.

Hi Michael,

I had a question on the Spotty 2.3 thread any you asked me what I did
concerning the developer ID. I cannot reply there and dont know why. I
just saw this thread and thought I can reach you here.

I have a playlist on Spotify that contains about 1000 songs. When I
choose this playlist it loads just 500 songs into LMS. Do you have any
idea what mistake I did?

I did the following:

------------------------------
Step 1
Go to https://developer.spotify.com/dashboard
Login with the user name and password of the regular Spotify account

Step 2
Go to “create a client ID”
Fill the form with some text. Check “I don’t know” at the question “What
are you building?”. Agree on all terms. Press “submit”.

Step 3
Copy the client ID and put it into the settings at the Spotty Plugin

Step 4
Restart LMS
-------------------------------

Many thanks
aeppsi

I'm trying to get this working on my server running WHS 2011.

When I go into the Spotty settings I'm unable to add my account, "There
has been a problem running the Spotty helper application. Please make
sure you have the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime (32-bit!) installed on
your system."

I've clicked on the link and installed Visual C++ Redistributable for
Visual Studio 2015? but there's no difference.

Could you please double-check you have installed the 32-bit version (NOT
64!)?

Sorry, looks like I downloaded the 64bit version.

Will install the 32bit version now.
